ESA Space Economy Steering Group
The Space Economy Steering Group advises the Director of ESA’s Industry, Procurement and Legal Services on the benefits arising from the use of space-based capabilities, in terms of services for the population, job creation and technical development. It also channels external guidance and expertise from Member States.
By providing a forum for discussion and exchange of information, the Steering Group helps those within ESA and the ESA Member Statesd delegations to learn more about the space sector worldwide, while investigating the socio-economic significance of space infrastructure and the potential impacts for the larger economy.
In particular, the ESA Space Economy Steering Group favours the sharing of best practises, methodologies and lessons learnt based on the experience of its members.
It also provides advice and assists ESA in the identification and assessment of socio-economic impacts, e.g. with respect to case studies of ESA activities and programmes.
The Steering Group and Member States delegations together identify the role and benefits of institutional support of research and development in space and detail economic returns on investment.
Such activities are performed as part of the preparation for corroborating decisions that are taken by the Council at Ministerial (C/M) level.
ESA’s Space Economy Steering Group therefore also assists in the elaboration of support documentation and C/M background information (in cooperation with the OECD), and in the review of ESA programme proposals.
The secretariat of the ESA Space Economy Steering Group is provided by ESA. Experts – one or more per country – are appointed by the delegations of each Member State. Additional experts and stakeholders can be invited to participate and present their views in specific meetings.
