ESA's Space Medicine Team (SMT) is looking for a student intern to support the SMT’s education activities for a six-month internship at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC), near Cologne, Germany. The SMT is composed of 25 space medicine experts from a variety of health-related fields, whose task is to ensure the physical and mental health of ESA astronauts, helping them to be productive and thrive in the harsh environment of space. 

The Space Medicine Team’s education section runs a portfolio of programmes for students aiming to introduce students to the physiological challenges that astronauts’ experience, and understand the mechanisms that underlie physiological changes in microgravity.

We are looking for an intern to support our education coordinators for six months from October 2018 to March 2019. Tasks would include: Support schedule development; contribute to the development of course materials; liaise with programme contributors, participating students and co-organisers at the ESA Academy (ESEC: Redu, Belgium); collate data of participating students; organise transport and accommodation for students and contributors; support programme delivery including wrap-up phases (collate feed-back, distribute lecture material etc); support programme review and improvement processes.

Position

The intern will report to the EAC Education Coordinator and support the Space Medicine Office’s education section at the European Astronaut Centre ESA/EAC, located in Cologne, Germany.

Desired skills and experience

Experience in organising small to medium scale events; excellent communication skills; attention to detail; business proficient English (written and spoken); good command of spoken German desirable; passion for Human Spaceflight and Space Science; background in life sciences, human physiology and/or space physiology is an asset.

You will be encouraged to take on new challenges and learn new skills, working in a stimulating, multi-national environment close to the historic and vibrant city of Cologne.
