26 May 2011

Young environmental journalists from all over Italy will gather at ESRIN tomorrow for the award ceremony of the national competition 'Giornalisti nell’Erba (gNe) and the Living Planet', organised with the support of ESA. The whole event will be streamed live on the ESA Italian page.

The 700 young environmentalists, aged 5 to 21 years, were requested to write, shoot, record and investigate environmental issues by every possible means.

Jérôme Benveniste, Senior Advisor to the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes and member of the gNe Selection Committee said: "It was a pleasure to read through and view the impressive work submitted by the young journalists. Selecting the winners turned out to be a very difficult task, because there are a great number of excellent articles, drawings and videos, both in the Italian and the international sections."

"I was particularly impressed by the strong interest shown in the Living Planet Programme and the recurrent messages about the importance and even the necessity of loving, caring for and preserving planet Earth."

Throughout the day, officers from the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes and the ESRIN Health, Safety, Security and Environment team will share details and insights with the young journalists on environmental monitoring activities from space and on the efforts to minimise environmental impacts at ESRIN.

Live streaming will cover the whole ceremony from 9:30 to 16:30, with a separate award session taking place for each of the three different age groups, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-21 years.
