Visit ESA Business Incubation Centre at Farnborough airshow
Small high-tech companies and entrepreneurs can find out more about how ESA Business Incubation Centres can help to grow business ideas based on creating new non-space solutions out of space technologies, and turn them into viable companies, at this year’s Farnborough airshow.
The Farnborough international airshow, being held 9–15 July, is the world’s longest-running aerospace trade show and known for promoting innovation in aerospace.
In the dedicated Space Zone, the ESA stand offers advice and support to entrepreneurs on the benefits of joining the ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) programme.
Representatives from ESA BIC Harwell in the UK will answer questions and discuss the business opportunities offered.
ESA BIC Harwell provides up to 10 start-up companies per year with a unique and intensive package of technical expertise and business support, including access to sources of regional, national and joint venture capital funding, access to UK Science and Technology Facilities Council and ESA technical expertise, intellectual property, hands-on business development support and a broad portfolio of contacts, creating the ideal innovation environment.
ESA BIC Harwell is one of the seven business incubation centres ESA has set up throughout Europe.
Their mission is to support entrepreneurs and start-up companies in getting their business ideas off the ground – ideas on how to transfer existing and available space technologies and systems into non-space systems and services, thereby creating growth and jobs in Europe.
The aim is also to enlarge the small- and medium-sized companies (SMEs) market base, so existing SMEs are also welcome.

ESA’s Business Incubation Centres
The ESA Business Incubation Centres are one of the cornerstones of the Agency’s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO).
As part of its endeavour to encourage the transfer and commercialisation of space technologies, seven ESA BICs have been set up in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, UK and Belgium.
The centres support selected entrepreneurs with comprehensive commercial and technical assistance to help them start up businesses that use space technology in non-space industrial, scientific and commercial fields.
ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office
The main mission of the ESA Technology Transfer Programme is to facilitate the use of space technology and systems for non-space applications to take advantage of Europe’s investments in space research and developments to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry, and at the same time demonstrate the benefit of the European space programmes to Europe’s citizens.
ESA TTPO is responsible for defining the overall approach and strategy for the transfer of space technologies and systems, including the incubation of start-up companies at ESA business incubation centres and related funding.
The office has transferred over 260 technologies since the programme start and is supporting directly and indirectly around 100 new start-ups a year. TTPO has also initiated as a limited partner the Open Sky Technology Fund, a €100 million venture fund that invests in start-ups using space technology.
