In what ways are businesses today using Earth Observation data to provide services to customers? A wide-ranging survey across Europe and Canada has been gathering information, and initial results are being presented at an ESA workshop this week.

On behalf of ESA, Vega Group PLC and Booz Allen Hamilton are carrying out a survey of value-adding Earth Observation (EO) services available from European and Canadian firms. Companies are also being asked to share their views on the status of the EO value-adding sector as a whole, and how best ESA can aid its growth in future.

Interim results from this ongoing consultation process are being presented on the first day of a two-day Earth Observation Market Development (EOMD) workshop at ESA’s ESRIN centre at Frascati near Rome, beginning on Wednesday 5 November.

Entitled ‘European EO Services: Today’s Industry, Tomorrow’s Markets’ the workshop is aimed at value-adding companies across Europe providing EO-based services.

The Vega Group and Booz Allen Hamilton will be giving details of the emerging picture of the EO service sector across four main areas; The Services, The Companies, The Industry and The Business.

Midway through Wednesday afternoon the workshop focus will change to coming developments likely to drive demand for EO-services during the next three years, and how value-adding companies should plan accordingly.

A series of forward views will concentrate on particular market segments: coastal zone management, forest management, pipeline monitoring, urban subsidence and mine waste monitoring. Non-EO specialising companies that work close to the market in these sectors will carry out these briefings.

For more information on the workshop, and details how to register if you wish to attend, visit the ESA EOMD website http://www.eomd.esa.int and click on ‘news and events’.
