    8 December 2006

    The IAASS Space Safety Academy will hold a new Payload/Cargo Safety Course in ESTEC, The Netherlands, 12-16 February 2007. The objective is to provide an understanding of ISS payload/cargo safety as it relates to the overall development and integration process, how the payload/cargo safety review process works, and the roles and responsibilities of the various players.

    In addition the student will be instructed in the hands-on fundamentals of hazard analysis, hazard documentation, and presentation to the Payload Safety Review Panel.

    The course targets payload safety engineers, system engineers, QA personnel, project managers responsible for development, integration and operation, and other technical personnel who contribute to the design and operations of payload/cargo and need to understand the process by which hazards are identified and controlled.

    The course will cover the following topics:

    • Payload/Cargo and System Safety Philosophy
    • Hazard Identification and Control
    • The Payload Safety Review Process – NSTS/ISS 13830C
    • Preliminary Hazard List and Preliminary Hazard Analysis
    • Flight Safety Requirements documents: NSTS 1700.7b, ISS Addendum, NSTS/ISS18798;
    • Overview of Technical Requirements, and Lectures by Invited Speakers
    • NASA-KSC Ground Safety Requirements
    • Cargo Vehicles (ATV, Russian) Safety Process and Technical Requirements
    • System & Subsystem Hazard Analysis (FMECA, FHA, FTA, etc.)
    • Safety Verifications
    • Writing Hazard Reports and Safety data Package
    • Successful Presentation to the Payload Safety Review Panel

    Following instructor briefings, teams will work together to perform and document hazard analysis. By the end of the workshop, each team will present their final analysis to a mock Payload Safety Review Panel.

    Instructors and invited speakers are from IAASS, ESA and NASA. IAASS is the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety.

    The number of participants is limited to 30, so early registration is recommended.
