European Space Technology Transfer Conference
The European Space Technology Transfer Conference will take place at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from 16 to 17 October during Materialica 2007, the 10th International Trade Fair for Material Applications, Surface Technology and Product Engineering.
Organized by MunichExpo, with the support of ESA (represented by its Technology Transfer Programme) and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology, the two-day conference is entitled: The Space you need to get your business off the ground. Participants will be given up-to-date information and advice on how they can benefit from using space technology in non-space applications.
Some examples
It takes enormous power to launch Europe’s satellites into orbit. For example, an Ariane-5 launcher has over 16 000 horsepower - the equivalent of two of France‘s high-speed TGV trains travelling at maximum speed. This amount of power means that intense noise, vibration and heat are generated during launch, requiring an exceptionally robust launcher made from specifically designed materials.
Today, these same technological solutions are being used to make vibration absorbers for earthquake-proof houses as well as for thermal insulation in racing cars. Just two examples of how the transfer of advanced space technology to non-space applications brings significant benefits to life on Earth.
During the Conference, participants will be able to discuss these and other ways in which space technology is being transferred for use in sectors as varied as the automotive, medical, energy, textile, security and robotic industries.
Key note speakers from ESA and NASA will explain the advances that have arisen out of their pioneering work in space exploration. Then, the first day will conclude with Prof. Dr Ulrich Walter, Head of Chair of Astronautics at the Technical University of Munich, and former German astronaut, talking about his first-hand experience of the complexities of engineering spacecraft.
