ESA will present the current situation of European space industry to Hungarian industry and institutes, at a workshop in Budapest, Hungary, 8-9 June. This will be followed by bi-lateral meetings with industry to provide advise on how to increase their participation in European space activities.

Hungary signed the European Co-operating States (ECS) Agreements with ESA in April 2003, and later the same year became the first PECS country to ESA when it signed their PECS document (Plan of space collaboration activities for European Cooperating State) 5 November 2003. At that event Dr Elõd Both, Director of the Hungarian Space Office, said, "The function and importance of PECS is to pave the way forward for Hungary towards ESA."

Budapest workshop

The workshop will present issues and trends in the commercial and institutional space markets at world and European level, from equipment suppliers to end-users. This should provide a road map for how to build competitive and sustainable space activities in Hungary using ESA programmes as a key element in this process.

To support Hungarian industry and institutes to better define their niches and potential European partners, a recent mapping of the competencies of more than 170 companies in ESA Member States and Canada, will be presented.

In addition an independent assessment of Hungarian’s industrial and research capacities is currently being carried out by the French firms Bertin Technologies and Euroconsult to support Hungary and ESA in defining the most appropriate industrial space policy for future activities.

The June workshop complements this activity and provides Hungarian companies and research institutes with an opportunity to discuss their specific capabilities with ESA.
