ESA helps the League of the Young Voters to spread its core message. The League of the Young Voters was launched at the Yo!Fest in Brussels in May 2013. During the launch ceremony, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, symbolically handed the badge of the League to ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, with the mission to take it into Space.

ESA Astronaut Luca Parmitano, currently on board the International Space Station, also contributed to the ceremony with an inspiring message encouraging young people in Europe to mobilise for the European elections in 2014. Luca took the badge with him into Space.

When the badge is brought back down to Earth, it will be handed over to President Barroso by the European Youth Forum and ESA.

The League of Young Voters aims to tackle the ever-decreasing youth participation at the European Parliament elections by becoming the electoral platform for young people in Europe. The League seeks to increase the level of youth-related information available about the elections. It also encourages political parties and candidates to engage directly young people in their campaigns.

The League of Young Voters is an initiative of the European Youth Forum, the International Debate Education Association (IDEA) and VoteWatch Europe.
