Space to communicate and locate
For more than three decades, ESA’s vision of developing new technology and satellite systems, such as ECS, Marecs, Olympus and Artemis, has kept Europe at the forefront in the fast-moving world of telecommunications, internet and multimedia business.
By investing in new technologies and system concepts, ESA acts as a catalyst for European industry to develop and exploit emerging products, services and markets. In the same way that today no one can ignore time, in the future people will need to know their precise location, and so a new revolution is about to take place.
Europe’s own independent satellite-based navigation system, called ‘Galileo’, is now taking shape thanks to joint efforts by the European Union and ESA. It will give Europe sovereignty in the promising satellite-navigation market.
