Meet the French start-up company Atmosphere at Paris Air Lab 18/6 and learn how their solutions can improve the connectivity of any kind of aviation, from commercial air transportation, helicopter operation to UAV and drone missions, including scientific missions.
The company excels in designing, building, and operating complete connectivity solutions for aviation industry. Its core expertise is in aeronautics, satellite telecommunication, networking and weather science.
"We equip all types of carriers whether it is very large carriers such as the A380 or Beluga XL to the smallest since our technology also concerns drones," says Jean-Marc Gaubert, founder and General Manager of Atmosphere.
Former employee of Thales Aleani Space, Gaubert decided to create his own company to develop new connectivity solutions for aircrafts, and founded Atmosphere in 2008.
Specializing in connected service supplies, Atmosphere has developed a platform called Planet that allows, in a collaborative way, to manage air missions in real time by satellite.
The company has its main base in Toulouse, in the heart of the French Aerospace Valley. In addition, Atmosphere has had an office in Munich since 2010 to support German users.
"Our expert team, composed of 10 dedicated engineers, strives to develop the right solutions to support flight operations, ranging from general aviation – including scientific missions - to commercial air transport, helicopter and UAV missions," says Gaubert.
Its niche business was honoured with the prestigious NASA award "Group Achievement Award 2018" for the breakthrough in separation management technology.
Used by industrial groups such as Airbus, Honeywell and Dassault for airplane or equipment tests, Planet also serves scientific flights dedicated to climate or weather.
PLANET, mission management service
PLANET is a connected information service dedicated to collaborative flight operations management. It enables real time exchange of data between airborne and ground operation staff and systems.
PLANET supports a range of connectivity links, including mobile internet connectivity such as Iridium and Inmarsat satellite networks, and terrestrial cellular networks. The service is delivered on wireless tablets and laptops, as well as fixed Electronic Flight Bags.
On the ground, PLANET offers a web portal for live monitoring, live chat, traffic statistic consultation, terminal configuration, mission replay and support.
PLANET in-flight services include:
- Tracking and monitoring of flight operations and mission management
- Telemetry and telecommand communication with ground
- Collaborative services: Markers, Chat, File Transfer
- Weather and Aeronautical Information
PLANET maximizes flight mission productivity by avoid wasted hours in useless flights, reconfigures mission targets in real-time and takes into account environment conditions. The system furthermore disseminates real-time information to all mission stakeholders and facilitates post-flight exploitation.
Gaubert empathizes that there is a good early Return on Investment, thanks to the relative low cost of PLANET, its low running costs, limited bandwidth requirements and a light web-based infrastructure.
PLANET is today used by our worldwide clients for flight tests, research flights, ferry flights and other ad hoc missions, as well as used on diverse platforms including aircraft, rotorcraft, balloons and UAVs.
With customers in France, Germany, US and Canada, Atmosphere recorded a turnover of €750,000 in 2017.
Gaubert adds that his team maintains a continuous R & D activity, "We participate in projects like CleanSky, for example. This allows us to keep up to date. The improvement of our platform is at the heart of our activity."

ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions
ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions programme has a network of 20 ESA Business Incubation Centres, 15 ESA Innovation Partners and 14 ESA Ambassadors throughout Europe. It co-funds projects and start-ups, while also offering technical and business support to companies that seek to deliver rapid innovation and to raise private investment.
Overall ESA spends €400 million a year on strengthening the competitiveness of European and Canadian companies in the global markets for both satellite communications andr downstream applications.
ESA BICs - World's largest ecosystem for space-related entrepreneurship
The ESA Business Incubation Centre Hessen & Baden-Württemberg was founded in 2007 and it part of the wider network of 20 ESA BICs throughput Europe.
The 20 ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) form the largest ecosystem in the world for space-related entrepreneurship and have fostered over 700 start-ups throughout Europe. Spread across some 60 cities in 17 countries, more than 300 start-ups are currently under the two-year business incubation development booster programme.
The centres offer complete access to all aspects of space-related innovation, technology and intellectual properties and is a gateway to ESA and European space research and developments. Located in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and UK, with more to open, over 700 start-ups have been fostered and another 180 new start-ups are taken in yearly to be supported under the two-years business development booster programme.
