Galileo will be Europe’s global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control.
It will provide more precise and reliable positioning and timing signals to citizens in Europe and around the globe. Its advanced technological features, its commercial orientation and its potential for integration with other technologies such as mobile services are already now tickling the creativity of innovative entrepreneurs and inventors.
To boost this kind of innovation, the European Satellite Navigation Competition was established and since 2004 spurs the formation of new ventures from SatNav technology and service spin-offs in areas as different as social networking media, healthcare, agriculture and commercial security.

Particularly in economically weak times, innovation is key to stimulate upswing. Results from space research can contribute to strengthen the economy by offering a vast portfolio of ground-breaking technologies open for commercial exploitation.
To support the creation of new ventures that use space technologies in economic fields that are not space related, the ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme (TTP) runs four business incubation centers (BICs) in four European high-tech locations: one in The Netherlands, two in Germany and one in Italy. Since the start of the programme, the four ESA BICs have already nurtured over 100 start-ups into fully fledged companies.
In this issue of Space for Business, we introduce the first technostarters currently incubated in the newly opened ESA BIC Oberpfaffenhofen – Modelon GmbH, Agrista GmbH and sportsCurve GmbH – dealing with such diverse fields of applications as automotive, agriculture and sports. In the next issues of Space to Business we will continue the series, introducing incubation companies from the other ESA BICs.
