Aerosols are fine particles smaller than dust. Naturally, they originate from dry soil or deserts sand, being swirled up by wind and taken into higher altitude due to their very little mass. Today, massive fossil burning produces - besides of trace gases - extreme amounts of aerosols, forming a climate altering layer high in the stratosphere.
