Using the same physical principle than the terracotta jug or the goatskin, the French company ThermaGen has developed a self-cooling container that cools any beverage by 15°C within minutes by evaporating one centiliter of water with the action of a special type of clay. The performance has been boosted above 20°C cooling to meet the extreme constraints of the desert. The control of the complex physical phenomena while using natural products and the optimization of the evaporator and heat exchanger required exceptional means of simulation. The techniques of numerical simulation developed for ESA within the framework of space applications made this challenge possible.
