The final integration process began on September 17, when the SMART-1 lunar exploration spacecraft was installed as Ariane 5's lower payload.
SMART-1 is the first of the European Space Agency's relatively low-cost Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology (SMART), which are to test new technologies for eventual use in Europe's future deep-space science projects.
