Climate Detectives Student Teams awarded at the Living Planet Symposium 2019
Students from the winning teams of the LPS 2019 Climate Detectives School Award travelled to Milan, Italy, this week to attend for a full-day ESA's Living Planet Symposium (LPS), the largest Earth observation conference in Europe, to receive their prizes.
ESA and ASI invited student teams participating in the Climate Detectives school project 2018-2019 to submit their investigations for the LPS 2019 Climate Detectives School Award. A joint ESA-ASI evaluation panel had the difficult task of selecting the four winning teams that would be invited to attend the LPS 2019 and present their projects in an award ceremony on 14 May 2019. Teams from Finland, Greece, Italy and Spain were the winners of the LPS 2019 Climate Detectives School Award.
A student from the 9K Lauttasaari team from Finland commented on their investigations: “It was very interesting to study the vegetation on our home island and we learned to use different research methods.”
“I learned to better understand the environment we live in, respect it and preserve it. “, explained a student of the Hot Inspectors team from Italy about their project.
During their participation at the LPS, students had the opportunity to meet scientists and ask them questions about their work at ESA. The students also took part in the LPS School Lab workshops in which, through hands on activities, they learned about Earth observation principles and how satellites monitor our planet from space.
“We are actually experiencing a lot of climate issues like flooding in our region. We are now speaking of climate issues here at the LPS while our home city is flooded. This is very important for us. “, commented Marco Nicolini, the teacher supporting the Italian Team.
The Award ceremony, during which each team presented their project, took place in the presence of of Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes. The audience, composed of Earth observation scientists, was impressed with the quality of the projects and with the hard work and commitment shown by the students. For the young scientists this was a unique experience that they will always remember!
