High school students from different ESA Member States have just arrived at the Andøya Rocket Range in Norway for the start of the 2012 European CanSat competition, which will run from 23 to 26 April.

During the campaign the 14 finalist teams will launch their CanSats and analyse their experiment results, and will then be judged by a board composed of representatives from space agencies and industry.

Stay tuned on this website and on our Facebook page and follow us as the CanSat campaign 2012 goes on.

Teams and their experiments

All teams have to complete the same primary mission: to measure temperature and pressure during the flight of the CanSat. In addition, each team has chosen its own secondary mission. The objectives of the 14 teams participating this year are:

Alpha
Bearsden Academy, Scotland
Objectives - deploy miniature rover upon landing, voltage measurements from solar panel onboard rover.

Azorean Shearwater
EBS Santa Maria, Vila do Porto (Azores), Portugal
Objectives – picture acquisition with GPS coupling, to demonstrate monitoring of sea levels and oil spills.

Bolyai
Székely Mikó Theoretical High School; Saint George (Sfantu Gheorghe), Romania
Objectives – atmospheric dust density measurement.

ENFoRCE
Istituto Tecnico Industriale (I.T.I.S.) Enrico Fermi, Roma, Italy
Objectives – descent control, GPS measurements, panoramic pictures of the landing site.

DeLaCosa
Colegio Retamar, Pozuelo, Spain
Objectives – 3D map of Andenes’s surface, external cameras deployment, and code development for data procession.

DJ AUXALTation
Sint-Pieterscollege Jette, Brussels, Belgium
Objectives –descent stabilization through the use of sensors, use of solar power as main source of energy.

Icaromenippus 3D
3rd General Lyceum of Mytilini, Strati Myrivili, Greece
Objectives – GPS location determination, flight analysis, and 3D mapping of planetary surface.

Jecnaci
Secondary Technical School SPSE Jecna, Prague, Czech Republic
Objectives –atmospheric temperature and pressure measurement and transmission coupled to GPS position, on-board data storage.

Navican
Heimdal Videregående Skole, Trondheim, Norway
Objectives – descent control through autonomous navigation.

Rocket
Crescent College Comprehensive School, Ireland
Objectives –acceleration measurement and transmission.

SatElite
Lycée Alfred Kastler, Talence, France
Objectives – height determination through temperature and air pressure readings, video recording.

Stella Nova Viking Red One (SNoViR I)
Haderslev Katedralskole, Haderslev, Denmark
Objectives – atmosphere and surface profiling through dust collection analysis.

The Flying Dutchcan
American International School of Rotterdam (AISR), The Netherlands
Objectives - measure optimal height for solar power collection through light intensity and altitude measurements.

Yes, we Cansat!
Höhere Technische Lehranstalt für Informationstechnologie, Ybbs an der Donau, Austria
Objectives - ultraviolet radiation and GPS measurement and transmission, video recording of the flight, on-board data storage, interface for ground control station and a mobile base station development.
