Sponsorship for event participation

Funding is available for students’ travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses for events of the REXUS/BEXUS programme. A maximum of four students from each participating SNSA/ESA team can be sponsored by ESA’s Education Office per event (for some events ESA may only sponsor one or two students as required).

Sponsored events may include: two formal experiment reviews, integration events (REXUS only), the launch campaign and a results symposium.

Eligibility criteria

In order to be eligible for sponsorship, the following criteria must be fulfilled(*):

  • The student must be aged minimum 18 years old. ESA Academy and relevant partners will only appraise applications from students who have no or limited professional experience in relevant scientific, engineering or other space-related topics;
  • The student must hold the nationality of an eligible state;
  • The student must be enrolled as Bachelor, Master, or PhD student studying, or researching a subject which is related to the programme, at an academic institute providing higher education (e.g. a university) in an eligible state.

(*) It is noted that the criteria must be entirely met at the time of the application, and in principle throughout the execution of the project, in order to be eligible for sponsorship. In certain cases student team members who recently graduated around the time of the project completion (e.g. experiment campaign) may still benefit from sponsorship, subject to ESA agreement.

ESA Mentor

Technical experts from ESA, SSC, ZARM and DLR will provide training, carry out design reviews and offer technical support and guidance to student teams throughout the project.

In addition to this, the support of an experienced ESA engineer or scientist from a suitable field will be offered to each SNSA/ESA team following the PDR. The ESA mentor will follow the integration and testing phase, offering advice on the functional aspects of the experiment in order to assist the team in meeting their scientific or technical objectives.

Please note that the conditions detailed above may be subject to change without prior notice.
