The project
The communications system has to provide a communication link between ground stations and the spacecraft throughout the ESMO mission. Its tasks include transmitting telecommands and software updates to the spacecraft and receiving telemetry and payload data from ESMO. Range and range rate (distance and velocity) of the spacecraft are also determined with the communication system. The communications system team designs the relevant subsystem and determines the ESMO link budgets.
