Up and Start will gather leaders and high-level representatives of some of the major European companies from a large variety of industrial sectors (space and non-space) to interactively discuss with the ESA Director General about the future role of Space as a catalyst to spur innovation through cross-partnerships of diverse industrial ecosystems. This event intends to initiate a unique disruptive dynamic, discussing inspiring goals that are far from market reach, attracting unconventional approaches to develop new solutions and business models, reaching out to wide communities of problem solvers.

The event will also showcase the success of start-up incubated by ESA BIC and the new ESA Grand Challenge Initiative.

Satellites from European institutions will play a major role during the exploitation of the new family of ESA-developed launchers, Vega-C and Ariane 6 which will be operative from 2019/2020. 　

In this round table, high level representatives from important European institutions are invited todebate how they can contribute to guarantee a level playing field for Ariane 6 and Vega-C exploitation with respect to competitors that can count on a very large number of institutional payloads.

ESA_Lab@HEC Paris is a cooperation scheme to intensify research, development and outreach between ESA and HEC Paris, one of the leading academic institutions in Europe specialising in education and research in business management. Given the possibility to work on interesting and challenging ideas, students from all degree programmes will be enriched with the knowledge of how disruptive, future-oriented space-based solutions can be developed for the benefit of society and economy. The project is part of the larger ESA_Lab@ platform newly established with the aim of intensifying collaboration with academia.

Jan Woerner, ESA Director General, will engage in an interaction on space matters with a citizens gathered together from very different areas, and benchmark live the results of the questions raised during a citizens’ debate on space for Europe organised by ESA in all its member states in September 2016.

ESA is teaming up with enthusiasts to build a desktop greenhouse for people to grow plants at home and in classrooms to test potential crops for space. ESA’s Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative team, MELiSSA, has been working for over 27 years to create ecosystems for astronauts. They fine-tune how microorganisms, chemicals, catalysts, algae and plants interact to process waste and deliver unending supplies of oxygen, water and food. Getting the data we need would take centuries because scientists would need to grow each plant themselves. Using a citizen science initiative is new for ESA but has great potential. ESA will present a prototype design for an AstroPlant kit at the Paris Air Show. The event is open to general public, plant experts, hackers, scientists, engineers, biologists, designers, artists, software developers and secondary schools as well as high schools and universities.

This is an open and interactive session that will again be dedicated to the younger generation – and with a chance to chat to ESA Director General Jan Woerner, about his plans for a village on the Moon or future international collaboration in space.  Moreover this will be the opportunity to meet our experts, take a tour of the pavilion and explore space!

The second and last chance for kids, teens, youngsters and social media followers to interact with us: ESA Director General Jan Woerner will once more engage in an open and interactive dialogue with a possible future generation of space explorers.

A new launch facility for tests and to familiarize astronauts with a Moon-like environment will be opened in the second half of 2017, exact date tbc.

Closing ceremony of the Student Aerospace Challenge – Défi Aérospatial Etudiant

proposed by the Astronaute Club Européen, ACE, in partnership with Dassault Aviation, Airbus, Safran, Thales and ESA.

Awards ceremony for winning teams of the Student Aerospace Challenge, an annual competition that allows university students to participate in studies for a reusable manned suborbital vehicle. This is divided into 11 work packages: Aerodynamics and Flight control, Structure, Propulsion, Innovative architecture, Cabin layout (except electronic devices), Onboard systems, Spaceport, Communication, Economical aspects, Legal aspects and Medical aspects. Students have the opportunity to create a team, put their knowledge into practice by working on a specific work package and enjoy an original experience which brings them closer to the aerospace sector. Selected teams had around five months to work on their projects and submit a report. They presented their projects to the partners of this challenge and the best presentations will be rewarded at this ceremony.
