N° 10–1994: 112th meeting of the ESA Council: Restructuring of "manned spaceflight" and "launcher" programmes

23 March 1994

At its 112th meeting, held in Paris on 22 and 23 March 1994, the ESA Council approved a new internal structure for the manned spaceflight and launcher programmes, as proposed by the Director General.

This restructuring follows upon the redefinition of manned space programmes decided at Council's last meeting (see ESA Press Release Nr 06-94 of 15 February). The new structure has two major components:

  • - manned spaceflight programmes, including their utilisation, and the microgravity programme,
  • - launcher programmes.

The main responsibilities will be as follows:
Manned Spaceflight and Microgravity Directorate: studies with a view to Europe's participation in the International Space Station and negotiation of the cooperation arrangements with the United States and the other international partners; Launcher Directorate: the Ariane-5 programme, the monitoring of Ariane-4 exploitation, and future launchers.
Mr Jorg Feustel-Buechl has been appointed Director of Manned Spaceflight and Microgravity, and Mr Fredrik Engstrom Director of Launchers.
