If the thought of space food conjures up images of tasteless, dry, yet highly nutritious muesli bars, then you should think again. For years scientists have been working hard to provide astronauts with a varied and appetizing diet. At SIAL 2004, the world's biggest gathering of food industry professionals, ESA will present the range of opportunities the International Space Station (ISS) has to offer food companies.

The recently conducted MEDIET experiment, a cooperation between Italian retailer Coop and the International Advanced Centre for Space Applications (IACSA), was a great success and showed that there is a huge potential for attracting commercial projects in the food industry.

Food industry

SIAL 2004, one of the most important food industry events, will take place 17-21 October in Paris, France. SIAL is the world's biggest gathering of food industry professionals, representing every sector in the global food market and covering the most promising market areas. The exhibition attracts, among others, professionals working in international distribution, marketing, and research and development.

Opportunities

By participating in SIAL, ESA hopes to make food companies aware of the vast range of opportunities the ISS offers in research, development and testing of new products and processes.

ESA promotes business opportunities within the frame of its Commercial Promotion Office, the Health Care Network and the Technology Transfer Programme. It will also promote the Erasmus User Centre as a strategic asset for marketing and communication.
