Tasks and experience
BIOTESC (BIOTEchnology Space Support Centre) from ETH Zurich, Space Biology Group, offers a deep understanding of biotechnological processes, including the supporting infrastructure and manpower.
This group offers expertise and techniques related to mammalian cell cultivation, bacteria, fungi and algae cultivation in bioreactors gained in long-term involvement in these fields, particularly for space applications.
The Space Biology Group has been involved in cell biology research in space since 1977. The technological know-how includes experience in the development of space-qualified instrumentation (e.g. incubators, bioreactors), organisation of biological experiments in space (ISS, parabolic flights, sounding rockets) and execution of realtime operations including telecommanding of facilities.
BIOTESC also provides a well-equipped ground infrastructure (laboratory, microgravity simulation devices) as well as providing support to scientists for the preparation and realisation of space experiments.
BIOTESC core functions are:
- Facility Support Centre for BIOLAB (Columbus Module, ISS)
- Facility Responsible Centre for KUBIK (Russian Module, ISS)
- Running of a Control Center for real-time operations
- Information center for national users and promotion of space station utilisation to the companies and research institutes.
