This experiment container is dedicated to convection experiments in spherical geometry and under a central force field, capturing essential geometrical features of planetary, atmospheric and oceanic convection.
The container consists of a sphere surrounded by an outer spherical shell. The two are able to rotate around a common axis with equal or different velocities. The convective fluid is hosted in the gap and is subjected to a radial temperature difference.
An alternating electric field can be established between the inner sphere and the outer shell. The resulting dielectrophoretic effect yields a central symmetric force field that is similar to planetary gravity fields. The convective planform is observed by means of a shearing interferometric technique over a field of view covering a significant portion of the sphere.
