A short description of the ACES payload elements is given below.
Frequency Control and Distribution Package (FCDP)
The comparison of PHARAO and SHM and the distribution of the ACES clock signal will be accomplished using the FCDP. FCDP compares the signals delivered by the two space clocks, it measures and optimizes the performances of the ACES frequency reference, and finally distributes it to MWL and GNSS payload units.
eXternal PayLoad Computer (XPLC)
Telecommand and data handling processes will be controlled by the eXternal PayLoad Computer (XPLC).
A GNSS receiver connected to the onboard timescale will provide precise orbit determination of the ACES clocks. It will support remote sensing applications such as radio occultation and radio reflectometery experiments.
Columbus External Payload Adapter (CEPA)
ACES is mounted on the NASA developed Columbus External Payload Adapter (CEPA). The CEPA provides all interfaces to Columbus and HTV. CEPA has already been used for the ESA payloads EuTEF and SOLAR.
