Technical data

The deceleration track is 51 M in length, 7 M wide with 3.8 M useable height. The impact area has access for large load delivery and a hoist capable of lifting weights of up to 1000kg. The 595kg test sled plus payload of up to 400kg is propelled to a maximum of 19 ms -1 by bungee elastic and is decelerated by cables, tensioned by a pneumatic/hydraulic system, to a maximum of 50g. The control of the impact pulses is achieved in two ways:
a. Vernier orifice system, producing any value of deceleration up to 50g. The pulse approximates to a half sine curve.
b. Shaped pin system, which can be manufactured to satisfy any customer specified deceleration pulses.

Data are captured using a 48 channel Kayser Threde K3600 data acquisition unit or a 32 channel K3700 mini data acquisition unit. The facility has two 2000 frames per second Memrecam digital video cameras and one ruggedised on board Memrecam digital video camera. Video and motion analysis can be carried out using Peak Motus motion analysis software.

The anthropomorphic test device calibration laboratory is 12 M by 4.75 M. The laboratory contains the neck flexion/extension, head drop, knee impact, thorax impact and centre of gravity rig supplied by First Technology Safety Systems of Detroit Michigan. Anthropomorphic test device calibrations are carried out to FMVSS 208.

The Impact facility has a family of Hybrid III anthropomorphic test devices consisting: a fifth percentile small female, a ninety fifth percentile large male, a fiftieth percentile male modified dummy (for aviation studies) and five fiftieth percentile male dummies. Two of these are used primarily for explosive protection studies that are carried out at customer specified test sites.

Also housed at the impact test facility is a helmet test laboratory with two 10 M high drop towers and all the equipment required to carry out impact testing on helmets to standards such as BS 6658, BS EN 397, BS EN 1078, BS EN 1384 and to MIL-H-87174(USAF).
