Solution Crystallisation Diagnostics Facility (SCDF)
Following the Announcement of Opportunity of 2004, projects with a common interest in growth of crystalline and amorphous structures from solutions have been identified for the development of an instrument capable of providing a range of optical techniques of general interest for nucleation, growth and solidification studies.
This is the concept behind the solution Crystallisation Diagnostics Facility (SCDF), which is intended to replace the Protein Crystallisation Diagnostic Facility (PCDF) hosted in the European Drawer Rack inside the Columbus laboratory. SCDF is an advanced light scattering instrument that combines state of the art static and dynamic light scattering, ultra low angle scattering and more recent multispeckle techniques based on cameras. In order to allow maximum versatility, SCDF will allow in orbit exchange of experiment specific sample cells.
The feasibility studies started in the first half of 2009, targeting an upload on ISS in the 2013-2014 timeframe.
