    Countermeasures Call

Please note that this call has been closed.

    Open Call for Ideas
    ESA-Countermeasures
    CI-06-CM

The term 'countermeasure' is broadly defined as 'an action taken to offset another action'. Exposure to weightlessness and its simulation by gravitational unloading in continuous minus 6º head-down-tilt bed rest (HDBR) cause deconditioning of various physiological systems in the human body. A countermeasure (CM) can be regarded as any method that mitigates or ideally prevents the undesirable physiological effects of simulated or real microgravity. HDBR is used to evaluate the effects of a CM before it may be considered for final validation in spaceflight.

With this call ESA invites the submission of ideas concerning

    1. CM, which have already undergone testing in human subjects and/or animal models. Such methods may be selected for application in future bed rest studies.
    2. New CM-concepts. If selected, ESA may decide to support concept studies of hardware developments.

The home institution of the coordinator must be in an ESA-Member- or associated Member State. For other submission requirements please download and complete the attached form. A digital copy (msword or pdf, file size less than 5 Mb) must be emailed to bedrest@esa.int.

One signed paper-copy must be sent to:

    NL-2201 AZ Noordwijk
    The Netherlands

Contact for questions: see email address above.

    Phone: +31 71 565 6612

Pre-selected candidates will be invited to submit a full proposal, which will be evaluated by independent external experts.
