Born 24 May 1972 Maxim Suraev is married and has one daughter. Maxim is a Major in the Russian Air Force and Test Cosmonaut of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre.

In 1994, he graduated with honours from the Kachin Air Force Pilot School as a pilot-fighter and in 1998 from the Zhukovski Air Force Academy as pilot-engineer-researcher.

He was selected as a test-cosmonaut candidate of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre Cosmonaut Office in December 1997.

Suraev was launched to the International Space Station on Soyuz TMA-16 on 30 September with NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams.

Maxim returned to the international Space Station in 2014 with ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst during his Blue Dot mission.
