Call for Media: see what is at stake at world’s largest Earth observation conference

    17 July 2012

PR 23 2012 - Media representatives are invited to a briefing before the opening of the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in Munich, Germany. The briefing hosted by ESA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will begin on Monday 23 July at 09:45.

The latest results and future strategy in Earth observation and climate research will be presented.

A particular focus will be on research into global change and the new space technologies that provide key data to advance Earth science.

    Programme: 09:45–10:30

    Press briefing

    • Remote Sensing for a Dynamic Earth: Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Chairman of the Executive Board, DLR
    • The European Earth Observation Programme: Volker Liebig, Director of Earth Observation Programmes, ESA
    • Recent Progress and Future Opportunities in Earth Observation: Ghassem Asrar, Director of the World Climate Research Programme
    • Media questions and answers

The plenary session will also be streamed live on ESA’s website.

    Media registration

Media interested in attending the event are requested to register via: http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEM8FLMXL4H_index_0.html

    About the symposium

The programme of this conference includes:

Critical information from European satellites over 15 years

The symposium will be looking into the latest results provided by Earth observation satellites from ESA, DLR and other space agencies from around the world.

The contributions that ESA and DLR radar satellites have made to our understanding of Earth and climate change over the last 15 years will be emphasised. Future satellite missions will also be highlighted.

Other topics include the dynamics of Earth processes and the measurement of soil moisture and ocean salinity from space.

    Hurricanes, extreme weather, vegetation, oceans

New applications for remotely sensed data on tropical cyclones and extreme weather, vegetation change and ocean surface winds and currents will be explored.

An afternoon will be dedicated to the achievements of 10 years of data from ESA’s Envisat mission, the largest Earth observation satellite ever built.

In addition, sessions will be devoted to the services being developed for Europe’s future Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme and to the family of Sentinel missions and their potential scientific exploitation.
