    EU GMES Regulation adopted

    GMES
    GMES
    25 October 2010

Paving the way for the future of the GMES programme, the European Union has formally adopted a Regulation that secures funding for the initial operations phase of GMES, which spans 2011–2013. This Regulation was formalised on 20 October.

This EU Regulation continues the investment ESA has already made in the GMES Space Component, which covers the development but not initial operations and beyond.

In accordance with the Regulation, the EU provides €107 million, of which €43 million are foreseen for the initial operation of GMES services and €64 million for the GMES Space Component; the latter will be implemented by ESA via an amendment of the EC-ESA Agreement on the GMES Space Component, which is currently being negotiated.

The official text, entitled 'Regulation (EU) No 911/2010 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 September 2010 on the European Earth monitoring programme (GMES) and its initial operations (2011 to 2013) is downloadable from the right-hand bar.
