ESA launches weather classroom tools
In time for this summer's launch of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite, the European Space Agency has unveiled a range of new educational activities. These begin with ESA's first set of classroom tools for secondary school teachers on basic meteorology.
Meteosat, Europe's first weather satellite programme, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2002. The next generation of Meteosat being sent into orbit this summer will take over from Meteosat-7. MSG will contribute to ESA's global environment monitoring programme.
ESA's easy-to-use, comprehensive, free educational toolkit on basic meteorology includes transparencies, handouts and background information produced by meteorologists in cooperation with teachers and educational experts. This freely adaptable material will be available in several languages. Teachers may also order the free Meteosat CD-ROM, "The Weather Machine" (includes text in English, French and German) or a video tape to add a multimedia element to their lessons.
Teachers may order the weather classroom toolkit, CD-ROM, and video tape by mail or fax, or preview and print the material on the web (please see the order form and the web preview). In addition to these tools offered by ESA's Education Office and Communication Department, a second set of educational materials for schools about climate change is planned.
