Within the framework of the GMES initiative, ESA is developing a series of ‘Sentinel’ satellites. As part of this development process, the Agency has released a call for Mission Advisory Group members for the Sentinel-3 mission.

Applications can be made via the following website: http://missionadvice.esa.int. Please note that the deadline for submission is 31 May 2010 (12:00 CEST).

Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) has been established to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers to access accurate and timely information services to better manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security.

Primarily, Sentinel-3 is a mission to support services relating to the marine environment, but also includes the capability to serve numerous land-, atmospheric- and cryospheric-based application areas. The first Sentinel-3 satellite is expected to launch in 2013, followed by a second so that they work together to provide maximum coverage.

The mission's main objective is to determine parameters such as sea-surface topography, sea- and land-surface temperature as well as ocean- and land-surface colour with high-end accuracy and reliability. The payload includes a precision radar altimeter, a dual view wide swath infrared radiometer and a wide swath ocean and land colour radiometer.

In general, the role of the Mission Advisory Group is to provide technical advice to ESA during the development and implementation of the mission.
