    MetOp industrial consortium

    Industrial partners

    The MetOp-A satellite has been developed by a consortium of more than 50 European industrial companies led by the Prime Contractor EADS-Astrium SAS, France. EADS-Astrium SAS also has the overall responsibility for the final integration and preparation for launch of the three MetOp satellites.

    Within this overall responsibility, major development responsibilities are delegated to:

    • EADS-Astrium Gmbh, Germany, is in charge of the development of the Payload Module (PLM) and for the integration of all the instruments. They are also responsible for the development of the ASCAT and GRAS instruments.

    • EADS-Astrium Ltd, Great Britain, lead the development of the so-called SMMS (Service Module Mechanical Subsystems), which include the Service Module (SVM) Structure, Harness, Propulsion and Thermal Subsystems.

    The MetOp-A Payload comprises instruments either procured by the Customer (CFI), which includes IASI, MHS, GOME-2 and a set of recurrent instruments from the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or by the Contractor (ASCAT and GRAS).

    The Soyuz/ST Fregat rocket is integrated at TsSKB-PROGRESS in Samara, Russia. The launcher procurement is under the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) responsibility, through Starsem, who provides both the technical interface and offers state of the art integration facilities at the launch site, the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
