Cloud Computing
The presentation will give an overview of cloud computing concepts, elaborate on the results of the study and its proof-of-concept (PoC) and provide an overview of identified follow-on activities in the domain.
Summary
Cloud Computing is an emerging paradigm that is entering more and more into mainstream IT in different application domains.
In the past years, a number of cloud-computing-related projects have been carried out in different domains in the Agency. HSO-GDA has in particular carried out, in close cooperation with HSO-GI and HFI-IC, an R&D activity aimed at analysing how the Cloud Computing paradigm can best be utilised to address some of the challenges of modern ground data systems, such as increased distribution and demand on computing resources, management of data systems infrastructure baselines, need for agility and efficiency in development, maintenance and operations and complexity of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) management.
More specifically, the objectives of this study activity have been:
- Identification of candidate ground data systems for different Cloud Computing service-provisioning models. For this purpose an analytic tool has been developed that utilises a set of metrics for systematic evaluation of the 'cloud-ability' level of the analysed applications
- Assessment of suitability of different Cloud deployment models, i.e. private clouds, public clouds or hybrid clouds, for each identified application domain
- Analysis of how and to what extent the private Cloud Computing paradigm can address the security requirements of ground data systems
- Evaluation of open source and commercial off-the-shelf Cloud provisioning solutions for establishing a private Cloud
- Definition of a road map for the potential evolution of the existing ESOC virtualised environment toward a private Cloud, including the identification of the required changes to existing business processes and the relationship between different organisational units within the Agency.
