Following the recommendations of the workshop on “Operational Risk Maps for Communicable Diseases using Integrated Space and Non space Assets” that DG-SANCO, CNES, the partners of the EDEN project and ESA organised in October 2007, the ESA IAP team has since then further investigated two main topics related to vector-borne diseases:
  • Predictive risk mapping for a disease: tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a human disease present in 16 European countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

  • Occurrence and predictive mapping of a disease vector (species distribution and spreading): mosquitoes are vectors for several diseases (West Nile Fever, Chikungunya or Dengue). Such diseases are an increasing public health concern in many European countries (France, UK, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain to name a few).
Based on the interest showed in the two above topics from many end users and experts, it was decided to carry out one feasibility study via open competition (i.e. invitation to tenders or ITT) on each of the topics and to organise two workshops to further define the content of these two feasibilities studies.
  • “Mosquitoes habitat mapping” workshop – Oct. 1st, ESTEC

  • “Tick-borne encephalitis mapping” workshop – Oct. 17th, ESTEC

The agendas will be released shortly on this website.
These two workshops are open to any participants (although mainly target end users) interested in the topics.

ESA invites any additional expert, end user, or potential service provider to these workshops.
