    External Laboratories (Electrical)

ESA maintains a Europe-wide network of specialized laboratories supplementing the technical services and competence provided by the ESTEC laboratories and the ESTEC Test Centre.

These specialist centres of excellence provide important benefits to European space programmes and industrial competitiveness, and continued access to these facilities is essential for Europe's space sector.

The following facilities are maintained in the area of electrical engineering:

Spherical Near Near Field Antenna Test Facility (SNFTF) at the Technical University of Denmark, Lingby (DK) – A worldwide reference facility for the calibration of standard gain test horns, highly accurate antenna measurements and validation of test ranges. It constitutes the ESA reference laboratory for antenna gain standards.

Spasolab, at INTA, Madrid (ES) – This facility performs independent assessment and qualification of solar cells, assemblies and type approval tests.

Millimetre Wave Laboratory (MilliLab), at Espoo (FI) – A state-of-the-art facility for measurements at millimeter-wave frequencies on components, circuits and systems.

Time and Frequency Laboratory at the Observatory of Neuchâtel (CH) – This laboratory serves as a reference for time and frequency equipment calibration and standards, including support for the Galileo programme.

Solar Energy Calibration Laboratory at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg (DE) – One of the leading solar energy research centres maintains this state-of-the-art calibration facility for solar cells used in space.
