Company: bliin BV
The Dutch company 'bliin BV' is the provider of 'bliin YourLIVE', a mobile and online social network that enables users to share location-based content, and community and commercial services.
With bliin, users can locate friends, family and colleagues in real-time on a world map and have access to geo-tagged ‘shares’ such as photos, videos, audio and text. At present, the system uses GPS to obtain the geo-position but once Europe’s satellite navigation system becomes fully operational it will use data from the more accurate Galileo.
The only requirements needed to use the system are a mobile phone or computer, phone and/or internet coverage, a global navigation satellite system receiver (GPS or Galileo) to provide the geo-location and the bliin software installed on the phone and/or the PC.
Project: bliin°YourLIVE! - Social networking while on the move
Basically the bliin system allows users to be 'followed' and to 'follow' other users on a map shown on a mobile phone or computer screen. Information can also be uploaded and shared with other users. To safeguard privacy the bliin system allows users to decide who can have access. Each user can define what and how much material other users are able to see and download.
The uploaded information, whether images, text or audio and video files, is located on a central computer system together with information about where users are located. User location is uploaded automatically by the bliin software on the cellular phone and photos, videos and other data files can be uploaded very simply using the same software. The system works anywhere in the world where there is mobile phone and internet coverage.
bliin YourLIVE has been available in a beta version for a while and by January 2006 bliin had 5500 registered users of all ages, mostly from the Netherlands but also from other European countries and places such as Kenya, China and the USA.
From space to industry
The bliin system builds on satellite-based navigation technology. Satellite positioning services will soon hit the mass market and a shift is expected from tracking and tracing devices for business to similar devices designed specifically for leisure and entertainment.
Currently bliin is in a pre-operational phase with several aspects still to be completed and refined. The system initially makes use of the GPS signal. Integration of the EGNOS/Galileo infrastructure into bliin will improve it's accuracy, and user’s safety and security.
