The ESA/JRC International Summer School GNSS 2016 will provide a comprehensive overview on satellite navigation, introducing the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), its signals, the receiver processing and finally determining the position-navigation-time solution.

At the two weeks summer school, international renowned scientists and specialists will give lectures as well as practical exercises and workshops to give the participants real “hand-ons” into the world of how to use satnav.

On the second week, personalized coaching will support the attendees in project groups to apply GNSS innovation in a plausible business case proposal. This is the capstone challenge, combining ideas from all the lectures with the personal experience of each team member into a rewarding, meaningful result. As part of the activity, team leadership and technical engineering expert roles will be addressed, and every participant will be given an assessment of his or her role in the team.

Both for newcomers and experts

The lectures and exercises are targeting both students relative new to the world of GNSS as well as those already experience in satnav.

The twenty-three lectures will cover all the main aspects of satnat and its elements, key technical aspects, opportunities with GNSS and elements to deal with using the satellite services in terrestrial applications. Three workshops will support the lectures in understanding in dept GNSS.

During the lectures specific applications cases will be used to illustrate the wider utilization like the one on how satnav systems are now being designed in Europe, USA, Russia, India and China for trains services to avoid rail accidents, and eventually will open up for safe deployment of automatic trains.

Interesting to become an entrepreneur?

Have you ever thought about the tremendously wide application range of GNSS technology?

There is so much more about it than just driving to unknown places with the help of you car navigator. Agriculture, shipping of goods, security and much more are areas where smart satnav solutions can improve significantly both the quality and the productivity.

The summer school will learn you about how to bring your GNSS idea down to Earth, and what it takes to make your own profitable business in the field of innovative satnav applications. Introduction to ESA's Business Incubation Centres will illustrate the opportunities ESA offers to you and other entrepreneurs to turn ideas into viable new European businesses.
