1958: On 31 January 1958, the first American satellite was launched.

Explorer 1 was launched four months after the Soviet launch of Sputnik. It measured cosmic radiation, and led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt. The instrumentation also included temperature sensors, a micrometeorite impact microphone, and a ring of micrometeorite erosion guages.
