Company: Fluid Solutions - alternative
Fluid Solutions - alternative (FS-a) was born at the beginning of 2009 with the mission “Fluid mechanics applied to the environment”, with the purpose, using the modern fluid mechanical tools, to improve the relationship between man and the environment.
The main target for FS-a is to be an innovative company that bring effective and economical solutions in emerging sectors such as environmental, civil and biotechnology.
FS-a proposes an innovative approach in handling and solving fluids (liquid and gas) related problems, using new application tools and innovative methods, aiming to become a recognized leader in the coming fluid mechanics surveys.
FS-a intend to develop a project in the marine environmental field. The coastal fluid dynamics is very important to evaluate environmental issues, especially dealing with infrastructures and safety in general.
FS-a works in coastal fluid dynamics, both with experimental measurements, developing a drifting buoy for the acquisition of current velocity field, and with numerical simulations building coastal models.
The purpose of the incubation is to improve the products that FS-a already uses, i.e. to define a model for the coastal survey, first beginning with information coming from measurement campaigns together with the remote sensing technology, then using numerical models applied to coastal dynamics.
Dealing with remote sensing technology, an important step is the implementation of the data coming from satellites (e.g. using SAR) into the numerical model especially for validation of the mathematical models, as well as the use as initial conditions or boundary conditions of the simulation.
Another relevant aspect is the interface between the numerical models and the high performance computing technology (GRID).
From space to industry
FS-a wants to provide a complete package for fluid dynamic problems solving, thank to:
- Accuracy of the data obtained through a multidisciplinary approach in studying coastal problems (ex. erosion, biological values); using different experimental techniques (marine buoy, Doppler and laser anemometers, GPS, remote sensing) and the application of the latest models of analysis supported by powerful CFD calculation (HPC systems), more accurate results are possible, in particular with Galileo the accuracy increases dealing with small scale areas such as port areas or estuary.
- Execution time reduced thanks to the use of a complex hardware architecture (HPC, GRID).
- Optimization and flexibility through the use of CFD numerical technique.
ESA Business Incubation
FS-a intends to use in its manufacturing process tools from aerospace research, with regard to numerical fluid mechanics and experiments.
Being at ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Italy. FS-a gets the opportunity to have easier access to the many technologies that were born and developed by ESA for space applications, such as CFD, remote sensing, GRID computing technology.
This facilitates the transfer of several of these technologies to FS-a's project names POSEIDON. For example, thank to ESA's resources and in particular for use of Galileo, the incubation period provides FS-a an access to accurate position data which is very important for developing POSEIDON considering that the project deals with small scale areas (port, estuary, coast proximity).

FS-a is under incubation at ESA BIC Italy from 15 October 2009 to 15 October 2010 and hosted at BIC Lazio’s ITech Incubator, partner of ESA business incubation initiative at ESRIN.
