Company: Galileian Plus
Galileian Plus s.r.l. is an Italian SME established in 2005. Since its establishment, the mission of Galileian Plus is to develop engineering solutions for applications, systems and services enabled by high precision GNSS technologies, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).
Main target area of applications is the study and monitoring of the territory, and the natural and man-made processes affecting it.
Galileian Plus has already gained a good experience in the field of GNSS data analysis software. In order to increase the company know-how also in the field of remote sensing, Galileian Plus started in 2008 research activities (R&D) on applications based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data.
The main result of this R&D activity is an innovative method for filtering and post-process SAR images which has registered as an Italian Patent. This has recently been extended for a Patent to European Countries (Request 09165451.7 of July 14th 2009).
Project: GI-SAR (Geospatial Information extraction from SAR)
The business idea is the sale of services for the automatic identification, classification and extraction of high resolution features and infrastructures in urban and rural areas based on:
- Exploitation of SAR technology and the relevant amount of data now available from both ESA (ERS, ASAR/ENVISAT) and national missions (Terrasar-X, Cosmo-SkyMed, Radarsat-2);
- The innovative method developed by Galileian Plus for filtering and postprocess SAR images;
- GIS technology and a dedicated platform to integrate EO derived geospatial information with other GIS layers.
From space to industry
The proposed service makes extensive use of SAR data from aerospace technology using microwaves for Earth surface remote sensing observations.
Satellite SAR data has already demonstrated to be useful in many civilian and military applications, in particular thanks to ESA missions ERS-1, ERS-2 and ASAR/Envisat.
The recent availability of high resolution data from new satellites (Cosmo SkyMed, Terrasar-X, Radarsat-2) can now boost the exploitation market because it allows implementing new or better applications especially for classification purposes.
ESA Business Incubation
Galileian Plus participation to ESA business incubation initiative will strengthen the further development in two areas:
- ESA’s expertise on SAR technology and it use, and consultancy support participating to the design review at major milestones of the project
- The provision of basic funding to support R&D activities.
Galileian Plus is convinced that specialized dedicated services based on the use of SAR data such those proposed are the most efficient way to boost the SAR data utilization.
Incubation period and location
Galileian Plus is under incubation with ESA BIC Italy from December 2009 to November 2010 and associated with BIC Lazio’s ITech Incubator, partner of ESA business incubation initiative at ESRIN.
