    Company: Geosystems Group

    Geosystems Group S.r.l. is a young, dynamic and motivated company, that offers innovative solutions developing successful projects and offering different products and services for the information and communications technology (ICT) area.

    Focused on geographic information system (GIS) systems, Geosystems realizes specific solutions for territorial analysis and environmental monitoring according to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) procedure required by EC in Directive 2001/42/EC.

    The company offers a multitask station for environmental analysis and monitoring collecting and processing data from remote sensors networks spread over a territory. The station encloses an integrated system with a Web-GIS functionality to distribute and collect territorial information in multichannel mode allowing the interoperability of information. The elaboration techniques on the raw data are the result of consolidated algorithms in remote sensing or comes directly from applied research.

    Geosystems Group s.r.l. also realizes logistics, video surveillance, remote control, E-Government services and integrated security systems.

    Project: SIMI2.0

    Geosystems Group intends to design and develop an innovative platform for the complete real-time monitoring of dams integrating satellite images with data collected by on site sensors. In particular, the system:

    • will carry out the inspection of any peripheral device/sensor installed on the area to be monitored and data collected by satellite technology;
    • will provide a tool for strategic support for the full comprehension of the territory and the phenomenon to be monitored so as to optimize the distribution of any device/sensor on the area of interest;
    • will enable very precise data collection;
    • will allow a real-time monitoring of environmental parameters of interest in order to support early warning strategies.

    To meet these characteristics, the system will be implemented integrating different environmental monitoring technologies and methods, integrating traditional instruments and satellite technologies.

    From space to industry

    SIMI2.0 system provides several advantages: In particular, the system greatly improves the way to make a useful environmental monitoring to avoid potential disasters.

    Through an accurate integration of data collected by satellite techniques thanks to ESA’s expertise and monitoring techniques with traditional instruments, it is possible to obtain a comprehensive monitoring system in which the strengths of the technique are able to compensate possible weaknesses.

    ESA Business Incubation

    To implement the SIMI2.0 system, ESA’s contribution by providing know-how and expertise in the use of satellite technologies is considered crucial. The satellite techniques to be considered for the dam monitoring and which has proven to be most useful for the implementation of environmental monitoring system is differential radar interferometry (DInSAR). An agreement between Geosystems Group and IREA-CNR of Naples will formally give to the company the possibility of using the DInSAR technology developed by Prof. Lanari’s IREA research team.

    The traditional monitoring network, consisting of a set of heterogeneous sensors deployed on the area of interest, will ensure the timely acquisition, real-time environmental parameters to be considered and also by a correct and precise identification of thresholds of danger to construct appropriate alarm systems.

    Partner of this project is LEICA GEOSYSTEMS that will improve ground devices according to Geosystems Group request. Also, the remote sensing images from the ERS and ENVISAT satellites will allow the realization of an excellent support tool for the design of the traditional sensors network for environmental monitoring.

    Incubation period and location

    Geosystems Group is under incubation at ESA BIC Italy from January 2010 to December 2011 with its Minturno (LT) office.
