MAVinci develops Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for acquisition of aerial images and orthophotos using completely automatic unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Gaining a fast and detailed overview of construction sites, disaster areas, crop and forest aeras or surveying objects such as development areas or waste disposal sites is easy, due to the UAV’s fully automatic take off, flight and landing.
The UAVs used are radio commanded autonomous operating small aircraft with wingspan 163-430 cm and payloads up to 10kg.
For the smaller SIRIUS I model the maximum flight time is 50min per trip.
MAVinci provides the complete ready-to-use systems with autopilot controlled UAV, camera, planning and control software which can be easily operated.
In addition MAVinci offers aerial imaging services providing high resolution images and large pictures of land areas. Resolution of the images ranges from 3 to 11 cm.
Project: SIRIUS Orthophoto UAS
SIRIUS UAS provides a complete solution that allows everybody to simply obtain aerial images and orthofotos in the visual range and compute three dimensional Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).
The system comprises the UAV aircraft with autopilot, ground station for route planning and flight tracking, camera kit and software for data processing.
Anyone is able to operate MAVinci’s SIRIUS UAS: The planning of the flight is done by using the MAVinci desktop flight planning software. The flight plan is then transferred to the UAV.
Before takeoff, the user has to switch on the autopilot and then just throw the aircraft in the air – it then takes off by itself. During the flight the UAV follows autonomously a track that was planned before takeoff.
The on board camera takes images automatically and the accomplished pictures is stored in an on board memory.
From the ground, the plane is followed by radio by a safety pilot who can take over the controls at anytime. After the flight the single pictures can be post processed to e.g. one large image.
From space to industry
Space technology and expertise are deeply integrated into the system.
Currently GPS is used for the UAV’s navigation to follow the predefined path according to flight plan. Later the Galileo navigation system could be integrated.
ESA Business Incubation
MAVinci is hosted at ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) Darmstadt, run by the German company cesah. This has provided the opportunity to consult ESA experts who have supported with technology insights and ideas to improve the system.
In addition, especially the support provided by cesah in relation to general business activities has been very helpful.
