Company: NHAZCA S.r.l.
NHAZCA is a spin-off company of Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. The company was promoted by the two professors Francesca Bozzano and Gabriele Scarascia Mugnozza and the post-doc researcher Paolo Mazzanti together with a private service and consulting company IMG S.r.l. working on geophysics and geotechnical/geological monitoring.
NHAZCA develops and uses innovative monitoring techniques and advanced numerical models for the assessment of natural hazards (landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes, snow avalanches, tsunamis etc) and of hazards related to the construction and operation of large infrastructures.
The company staff possess extensive experience in the use of terrestrial synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) interferometry for the monitoring of volcanoes, unstable slopes, rock scarp, buildings, monuments etc.
Project: MODE-TInSAR
The aim of the MOnitoring DEformations by Terrestrial Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MODE-TInSAR) project is to develop new processing approaches and methods to improve the monitoring efficacy of terrestrial SAR interferometry (TInSAR) of natural phenomena potentially hazardous for mankind (landslides, volcanoes and glaciers) and, in particular, of buildings and large infrastructures.
More specifically, the idea is to improve the accuracy in the measure of displacements by removing the atmospheric noise of the data and to develop new methods for a rapid and efficient dissemination of the collected data.
The requirement for high accuracy is particularly important for the control of historical buildings, monuments and cultural heritages whose stability can be affected also by small deformations.
From space to industry
TInSAR is a new technique based on technologies previously developed for satellite SAR interferometry. In other words, TInSAR has been developed starting from a satellite technology, today extensively used in Earth observation.
Hardware and software solutions, as well as collected data by satellite SAR interferometry, can be very useful in the development of TInSAR. Software and methodological approaches developed in the satellite field could be used for the processing and analysis of TInSAR data.
ESA Business Incubation
ESA experts with expertise in satellite InSAR data handling and processing are supporting NHAZCA in identifying the most suitable methods and approaches for the improvement of terrestrial InSAR monitoring. Specifically the support in the fields of Earth observation, satellite SAR interferometry, software engineering and software design represents an important asset for the development of new processing methods and software for TInSAR.
Incubation period and location
NHAZCA is under incubation at ESA BIC Italy from 15 January 2010 to 14 January 2011 and associated with BIC Lazio’s ITech Incubator, partner of ESA business incubation initiative at ESRIN.
