    Company: Raptech

Raptech is a spin-off from the Faculty of Engineering at the Tor Vergata University in Rome, Italy, and is constituted by researchers and university professors.

Raptech is mainly involved in the wireless communications sector, and in particular focused on the development of RFID and ZigBee technology, as well as embedded devices.

Raptech works in close cooperation and through specific agreements with numerous Italian and European research entities, such as the Tor Vergata University, the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (National Institute of Astrophysics) (INAF), the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the French Embassy in Italy.

    Project: Green Wireless Sensor Network

The project aims to design and develop wireless sensor networks based on ZigBee technology for saving and optimisation of production from renewable energy sources. The wireless sensor networks will use the 2.4GHz ZigBee protocol for communication of data.

The network devices will be characterised by their small size, low energy consumption and ease of applying even to existing scenarios.

The system management software will permit the configuration of a network and the acquisition and storing of data collected by the sensors.

The purpose of these sensors will be to monitor the consumption in domestic and industrial fields, providing quantitative support for energy saving policies that will or have been implemented, and if possible introducing automatisms that are capable of decreasing superfluous consumption.

The project is based on an Italian patent registered by Raptech 'Device used for the remote control of consumption and the production of electrical power'

    From space to industry

The idea is to transfer ESA’s knowledge on sensors, electronics, and the acquisition of data in the design and development of Raptech’s Green Wireless Sensor Network, targeted for both domestic and industrial fields. The development and production of hardware components, as well as acquisition and management software are foreseen to benefit from ESA’s expertise.

    ESA Business Incubation

Being under incubation at ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Italy will give Raptech the possibility to get easier access to ESA's experience in wireless communication, electronic engineering, standards and software systems (acquisition and processing of data).

Furthermore, the support of ESA staff in fields such as communication systems, storing of energy, antennas and relative electro-magnetic propagation aspects are also expected to be an advantage.

    Incubation period and location

Raptech is under incubation at ESA BIC Italy from September 2009 to August 2010 and hosted at BIC Lazio’s ITech Incubator, partner of ESA business incubation initiative at ESRIN.
