ESA Business Incubation Centres

ESA BIC Bavaria

In August 2009, the Free State of Bavaria, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the local bank Kreissparkasse München Starnberg Ebersberg opened an ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) in Oberpfaffenhofen – a hotspot of the aerospace industry in southeast Germany.

ESA BIC Bavaria at Aerospace Technology Park Oberpfaffenhofen

The location selected for the ESA BIC in Oberpfaffenhofen was the new Aerospace Technology Park Oberpfaffenhofen (ASTO), in direct vicinity to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) site.

The scientific expertise and development network of DLR’s renowned institutes for robotics, mechatronics, communications, and navigation complement local start-ups' technical development and promote both the commercialisation and use of aerospace technologies in other growth areas.

Due to increasing demand from company founders, the ESA BIC in Oberpfaffenhofen expanded to nearby Nürnberg and Berchtesgadener Land in 2011, thus becoming ESA BIC Bavaria.

At these two new branch offices, start-up companies receive support from local partners – including the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (ISS) and the business development association Economic Development Corporation Berchtesgadener Land, as well as banks in the areas.

The goal of this expansion is to assist the foundation of 70 companies by 2013. In doing so, ESA BIC Bavaria strives to attract further firms to southeast Germany and encourage job creation for the long term.

Managing ESA BIC Bavaria

The management of ESA BIC Bavaria is carried out by the Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO). AZO was set up in 2001 by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs at the prominent aerospace location Oberpfaffenhofen, located near Munich, Germany.

The company’s main goal is to drive innovation and incubation in the commercial use of space technologies and infrastructures.

Through the leading innovation networks for satellite navigation (Galileo Masters) and Earth monitoring (GMES Masters), AZO drives the creation of innovative products, services, and business concepts for these emerging market segments. The underlying business concepts are realised in the form of company foundations as part of the incubation programme at ESA BIC Bavaria.

With these complementary projects, AZO nurtures a full range of innovative commercial aerospace application technologies and infrastructures – all the way from initial ideas to market maturity.
