Final presentation of the I-GARMENT project
Funded by the ESA ARTES programme, the I-Garment project has successfully developed an Integrated System for Management of Civil Protection Units. The final presentation was held at ESTEC on 21/05/2008.
Led by the company YDreams (P), this project aimed at developing full-bodied smart garments equipped with GPS, body sensors to monitor vital signals (temperature and heart beat) as well as the body position (horizontal, vertical) of the wearers, and a communication unit transferring the data wireless and in real time to the operational control node. The main user of such a system is the Portuguese Civil Protection in order to accurately and effectively manage the human resources on the field in near real-time with the guaranty that the service provided will work even when terrestrial communications are unavailable (e.g. in harsh environments such as forest fires).I-GARMENT will help to know where each fire-fighter is located during an emergency event and what his/her health status is, thus allowing replacements to be organized in a timely fashion and teams to be moved according to the operational needs of the situation. For more information about I-GARMENT, please check this link.
