Space-MATCH 2011: a space tech spin-off opportunity
Space companies are to meet with non-space industries at the seventh Space-MATCH event to present technologies developed for space programmes and discuss their potential for terrestrial use.
Space-MATCH is organised by the Dutch TNO research organisation and supported by ESA and the Netherlands Space Office.
Entrepreneurs and industries from the non-space sector looking for novel technologies, solutions and expertise that can be turned into promising terrestrial applications and services can acquaint themselves with numerous technologies from space.
This year’s event is the first to be open to non-Dutch participants. The main topic will be technologies with spin-off potential in ‘safety and security’, with applications ranging from telecommunications to asset monitoring, from radiation detection to imaging and from hygiene and health to fire safety.
Start-up companies from ESA Business Incubation Centres are among those who will present spin-off innovations. Inventors and entrepreneurs will also be able to get further information about ESA’s business incubation initiative.
Space-MATCH 2011 will take place on 22 November in the Erasmus Centre at ESA’s ESTEC establishment in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, starting at 2 pm.

ESA’s Business Incubation Centres
In 2003, ESA decided to set up the BICs as part of its technology transfer programme, with the intention of helping entrepreneurs and young companies to use space technologies and knowhow in innovative new products and services in non-space fields.
Successful BICs have already been established in the Netherlands (Noordwijk), Italy (Frascati), Germany (Darmstadt and Oberpfaffenhofen) and the UK (Harwell). Being near major space sitesensures that specialist advice and consultancy is never far away: ESTEC at Noordwijk, ESOC at Darmstadt, ESRIN at Frascati, DLR institutes at Oberpfaffenhofen and the Harwell Oxford science parks in Oxfordshire.
A sixth BIC is in the planning for the Belgian Wallonia region, to be launched soon.
ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO)
The TTPO’s main mission is to facilitate the use of space technology and space systems for non-space applications and to demonstrate the benefit of the European space programme to European citizens.
