ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Hessen & Baden-Württemberg start-up company HOSTmi is developing a global online space market place to act as an independent broker to best match space experiments and payloads with most suitable flight opportunities worldwide. With “New Space” the conservative agency business is changing rapidly into a commercial business. Many start-ups are founded globally in the space market with exciting new products and services. Satellites with all sizes – from very small satellites so called CubeSats, up to big scaled satellites – are built frequently by newcomers and established companies.
Nevertheless, the current space market is still very costly, offers no transparency and is complex. The key to success will be the disruption of the current space market through the transition from conservative value chains to a modern, customer-oriented value network. New tools must be introduced into the market to overcome these barriers. One of these tools is platform economy.
HOSTmi – One-Stop-Shop broker for best match between payloads and flight opportunities
By standardizing the communication channel and the matchmaking process between payload customers and service providers globally, HOSTmi introduces a digital platform model known from Uber, Airbnb or booking.com, but unknown to the space market yet.
Transparency combined with high usability accelerates processes to a maximum, offers real-time information, saves resources and spending and decreases complexity to a minimum.
The HOSTmi web platform will create a win-win network for mutual benefit naturally serving both demand and supply side by handy facilitation of the matchmaking process between clients and suppliers. Clients can use search criteria to define requirements relating to both the space experiment or payload and the flight opportunity in details.
HOSTmi, in turn, provides the secure infrastructure and centralized supplier offers in contract to the highly fragmented offers in today´s space market. Moreover the platform provides access to mission-critical support services of top-tier independent third-parties, such as centralized technical support, finance and insurance packages as a One-Stop-Shop.
HOSTmi is hosted at ESA BIC Hessen & Baden-Württemberg at its Darmstadt business incubation site for a period of two years to kick-off their business.
Start-ups Zone powered by ESA space solutions at IAC 2018
ESA's Technology Transfer and Business Incubation Office (TTPO) with its ESA space solutions network presents 24 start-ups from Europe, Canada, Japan and Russia, 14 fostered at one of the ESA Business Incubation Centres – the ESA BICs, at the 69th International Astronautical Conference (IAC 2018) in Bremen, 1-5 October 2018.
The Start-ups Zone powered by ESA space solutions provides a look into great examples of aerospace technology systems and services developed by start-ups with visionary goals.
At pitching sessions on 2/10 and 4/10, the start-ups will present their business ideas and the Head of ESA TTPO Frank M. Salzgeber will present the potential of re-using already existing space technologies and ESA's Intellectual Properties as well as Europe's Earth observation and navigation services by start-ups and how their solutions can improve our lives here on Earth.
World's largest ecosystem for space-related entrepreneurship
ESA’s Technology Transfer and Business Incubation Programme Office (TTPO) operates the ‘ESA space solutions’ network of Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) and Technology Transfer Brokers offering complete access to all aspects of space-related innovation, technology and intellectual properties and is a gateway to ESA and European space research and developments.
Today, there are 20 ESA BICs in 17 European countries – Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and UK – forming the largest ecosystem in the world for space-related entrepreneurship.
Over 650 start-ups have been fostered and another 150 new start-ups are taken in yearly at ESA BICs to be supported under the two-years business development boosting programme.
